What is the Brown Mural Project SB 54?
“The significance of the Oliver L. Brown vs. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas is known throughout the world and one that has paved the way for the modern revolution for human rights in the United States,” said Rep. Valdenia Winn (D - Kansas City), the Chairperson of the Capitol Preservation Committee.
In 2010 the Kansas Legislature passed Senate Bill 54, commemorating the 1954 Supreme Court Decision of Brown v. the Board of Education of Topeka. In commemoration, Senate Bill 54 called for a mural to be painted in the Kansas state capitol building. A Capitol Preservation Committee has formed to oversee the mural's plans and to preserve the historic significance of the capitol for the future. The Brown Mural Project will memorialize Brown v. the Board of Education of Topeka by capturing its effects on Kansas, the United States, and the international community.
